From screen to panel

30 Jun, 2005

Writing a comic based on a game inspired by comics isn’t as simple as it may seem. Over at GameZone, you can read about the challenges faced by Mark Waid, writer of the first three issues of the new City of Heroes comic from Top Cow, and how he approached them:

In some ways, it’s a little more difficult in that there’s so much backstory developed for these characters that only the designers know. It’s not like writing Superman, where I’m in all likelihood and seriousness, the world’s greatest living authority on the character’s history - writing CoH is a voyage of discovery, learning that what I know about, say, Statesman or Manticore is only the smallest bit of what the developers have already worked out for them as characters.

You can read the full interview here.

Come scrap with PC Zone!

21 Jun, 2005

PC Zone HeroesFancy a chance to smack about a PC Zone staffer with superpowers? Long-term reader of the magazine, and want a chance to chat with the creators? Well, this Thursday you’ll get your chance when PC Zone moves it’s regular Fight Club to the Defiant server for a ‘smackabout’. (It’s like a kickabout, only without the ball.)

Logon to the Defiant server on Thursday at about 6:30pm, get yourself to the Emerald Lobby in the Arena, and you’ll be able to mix and mingle with the PC Zone super-crew, as seen here. From left to right:

Paul Presley, Section Editor AKA Ginger-Vitus!
Jamie Malcolm, Deputy Art Editor AKA Dr McThistle!
Jamie Sefton, Acting Editor - AKA Yorkshire-Man!
Will Porter, News Editor - AKA Night Porter!

The Zone staffers want to stress to all eager heroes currently cracking their knuckles in anticipation that Fight Club is just a bit of fun, and that they’d really rather not be pounded into wet mush by all-comers on the night. But still, if such a thing was to happen, we wouldn’t be able to do much about it… if you get our drift.

To catch up on the latest PC Zone online gaming activity, make sure you visit Zonegames.co.uk. And if you can’t make this month’s Fight Club, come back on Thursday, 21st July for a rematch - we’ll remind you again nearer the time.

CoH European Wrestlefest 1

14 Jun, 2005

imageOn Saturday 18 June, self-styled ‘Overlord of Union’ and founder of the QWF, The Question, will be organising and running the first ever CoH European Wrestlefest on the Union server. Players from all European servers are invited to head over to Union and create a Level 1 wrestler, complete with “bad hair, big muscles and corny gimmicks”.

The action will kick off with a series of Supergroup battles dubbed ‘The Aristocratic Quake’, followed by a 1v1 tournament to decide the first QWF European Champion. There will also be a number of competitions held throughout the event, including awards for ‘Funniest Gimmick’, ‘Most Amusing Trashtalk’ and more.

For full details, head on over to this thread on the Official Messageboards. English-speaking players should also note that the Wrestlefest is being combined with Orion star’s ‘Big Event’ on Defiant for a whole day of fun, games and competitions. Check out this thread for more information…

United we stand

14 Jun, 2005

You can find more information about both of these new developments on the Official Message Boards - Union Supergroups looking for a home should check this thread, and if you feel like a spot of Team speak on Defiant, take a look at this one. Alternatively, just point your browsers at www.supergrouphub.com

Statesman gets chatty

14 Jun, 2005

Last week, the Stratics Network held the latest of its ‘House of Commons’ chats with the developers of City of Heroes. This time around, Statesman was present to talk about Issue #4 and what’s in store for the heroes of Paragon City in the upcoming Issue #5:

What are the new zone events coming with Issue 5?
It seems that the Trolls have a new supply of Superadine, and they are having HUGE parties to celebrate… parties that have unfortunate consequences for the citizens of Skyway. In addition the Hellions have taken up arson as a new past time, and the Paragon Fire Department is looking for a few good Heroes to help out...

You can read the full transcript of the chat over at Stratics.

Defiant’s next Big Event

07 Jun, 2005

On Saturday 18 June, Orion_star is organising a virtual smorgasbord of events for the delight and delectation of the heroes of Defiant. Set to kick off at 10am and run throughout the day, plans include a costume contest, death race, hide and seek, a suicide party (no, Im not making this up) and a big dance party to wrap things up in the evening.

Obviously, with ambitious plans like these, help will be required. So if you feel like lending a hand and helping to run some of the events, offering your support or even coming up with a catchy name for the whole shebang, check out this thread on the Official Message Boards.
