Rockjaw’s Roughnecks 2 - Bridger’s Brawlers 0

29 Apr, 2005

The victorious Rockjaw! And friend.Battle was well and truly joined last night on the EU Training Room, as two colossal supergroups - formed under the mighty leadership of Content and Community Manager Rockjaw, and Community Coordinator Bridger - clashed over two Supergroup Rumble matches. The battles were long and hard, but in the end, there could only be one winner.

In case you’re wondering, it’s the guy with his arms raised on the left.

Yes, thanks to sterling help from a throng of players from across our European servers, Rockjaw’s Roughnecks triumphed not once, but twice during two matches. And that’s why it’s me, Rockjaw, bringing you this update, while Bridger remains in the corner, sobbing quietly.

Alright, he’s not sobbing, but he does keep muttering something under his breath about “a reckoning”. I think he’s talking about a rematch, but frankly, why would he want to get thrashed and publicly humiliated again? Full match commentary, and some in-game screens, inside.

Things that make you go BOOM

25 Apr, 2005

Gaming site Boomtown has published a preview of the new features heading our way in Issue #4: Colosseum, based on the version currently available on the EU Training Room. If you haven’t had the chance to check it out for yourself, this your chance to find out more about what’s on the horizon for your heroes:

The fun part though came with the scaling feature, which is truly wonderful. As a player I was able to manipulate pretty much any part of my body into any number of weird and wonderful shapes. The scaling feature allows you to extend things like the jaw line and drop the cheek bones or widen the nose or make it smaller. I cannot wait to see what other players come up with...

Paragon Club Night on Friday

20 Apr, 2005

Heroic promoter Quickblade (Draven on the Official Message Boards) is organising another evening of music and dance where Union’s crime busters can kick back, relax and socialise after a hard week, erm, busting crime.

As usual, the venue will be the city’s one and only multi-dimensional club, the Paragon Dance Party, and things will kick off at 7.30pm. You can either make your own way there, or just nip over to Steel Canyon, send Quickblade a tell and he’ll arrange for you to be teleported to the entrance - he’ll be on door duty from 7.15pm, so don’t be late.

For more details, including a rather handy FAQ about the Paragon Club Nights, check out this thread on the boards.

A chance decision

19 Apr, 2005

imageLast Friday (15 April) saw the latest costume contest to be held on the Union server. Dozens of hopeful heroes pulled on their freshly cleaned formal costumes and did their best to impress the judges and contest organiser Hobojack, in an effort to win a share of the 5 million Influence prize fund.

After some hard decisions, the entrants were narrowed down to a final ten, and then from those to five finalists. The eventual runners-up were Heretic, Silent Edge and Feirce Natz, who walked away with a million Influence each, and the winner was Chance, seen here in her stunning blue and white costume collecting her 2 million Influence prize from organiser Hobojack.

You can read all about the contest and see some screenshots in this thread on the Union board, or take a look at Issue #4 of Justin Tyme’s online City of Heroes newpaper, the Galaxy City Post & Tymes, which has a feature about the contest.

From screen to page

13 Apr, 2005

imageIf a preview of the forthcoming City of Heroes comic from Top Cow wasn’t enough, how about a chat with the man responsible for melding the vision of Cryptic Studios and writer Mark Waid into a coherent whole? The guys over at ComicDomain have managed to drag artist David Nakayama away from his drawing board long enough to talk about the unique challenges of transfering the action from a computer screen to the page:

As City of Heroes already has a set ‘look and feel’ has it helped or hindered your creativity?
It’s actually a big help. While it is a huge challenge to match all the characters and locations with their counterparts in the game, I don’t have to design EVERYTHING myself, and that saves time. And no one’s forcing a particular style on me either, so I can draw on my strengths and really go all-out.

As you see from the preview pages at Newsarama and the exclusive pencil sketches at ComicDomain, Nakayama going “all-out” has resulted in some great artwork for the new book. You can read the full interview here.

Statesman RIP?

13 Apr, 2005

imageComics megasite Newsarama.com has managed to snag a ten-page preview of City of Heroes #1, the debut issue of the new comic from Top Cow that’s due to replace the current Blue King Studios series in late May.

Written by Mark Waid, with pencils by David Nakayama and colors by Sonia Oback, the first issue kicks off a three-part story and will be available with three different covers by the likes of Rodolfo Migliari, Dale Keown and George Pérez. The preview pages at Newarama are an early version, but give an interesting look at Waid’s take on our favourite city and its most famous heroes - who seem to have got themselves in a rather tricky situation…

You can read more and view the preview pages here.
