City of Villains Beta details announced

Currently in development by Cryptic Studios, City of Villains is a stand alone expansion for City of Heroes that will let you don the mantle of a criminal genius and pit your wits against the heroes of Paragon City. We know that many of you can hardly wait and are already perfecting your maniacal villain laughs, so we are pleased to announce the first details of the European Beta, which will take place later this year.

The good news for all our current City of Heroes players is that everyone who signed up for a European City of Heroes account in the month following launch (that’s 4 February to 4 March, 2005, date fans) and has been subscribed to the game for at least six months when the Beta starts will be guaranteed a place in the City of Villains European Beta.

If you haven’t yet joined the fight to save Paragon City from the forces of evil, though, don’t despair. Everyone who signs up for a City of Heroes account during the second month after launch (5 March - 31 March, 2005) and has been subscribed for at least six months when the Beta starts will be given priority when the remaining places are assigned.

“It makes sense for us to offer this incentive to our most dedicated players. Who else would be more capable of assisting us in the beta test than the folks most familiar with the way City of Heroes works?” said Jack Emmert, Cryptic Studios Creative Director and Lead Designer of City of Heroes and City of Villains. “The bottom line is that if you subscribe to the game and play regularly you have a better chance of getting a first look at City of Villains.”

We’ll be bringing you lots more news about City of Villains and the European Beta over the coming months, but for now, keep up the fight against crime and we’ll see you in Paragon City…

What i dont understand is why COV isnt a upgrade to COH, does this mean that heros and Villans that are being role played wont be able to fight?

Okay it is like this i havent been able to play for about 3week beacuse of my 60 dayes acount ahs expierd and the sotre is all out of them i realy whant to get in to teh beta i played the bets for amerikan COH i played the Us COH before it came to eu i played the Eu beta and well now play the Eu acoount does thsis effect my chanse to ge tin in annyway beacuse of my lakk of playing fo r 3 weeks?

just a thought, surely people who have beta’d games before (like me...) would be more useful.  You have to remember that beta testing is a process of bug squishing, and polishing, ready for released. On offline games this is usually done by the developers, but with MMOG’s, developers prefer community involvement/feedback.

I just think that people with a better understanding in what is required of beta testers is more useful to cryptic than players who just wanna play it sooooooo bad.  You’re there to do a job, not to have fun wink

I’ve beta’d PlanetSide, Matrix Online, and Eve Online, and single handedly squished several bugs in them.

NO FAIR!

I am so jealous of all you lucky people. 

I have been playing COH for a few months now but I play on my friends PC on their account.  I have saved over £600 to buy a PC and it arrives this Wednesday with the game. 

I am a huge fan of the game and feel I am going to miss out.

I know its unlikely, but should there be any spaces left after you have invited those accounts entitled to the BETA then please send me an invite as I have been excited about this for months.

I would request out of the kindness of your heart you just invite me anyway but as you are the master minds behing the super villans so I can’t see that happening. - lol

This game is gonna be even better than the very fun game city of heroes even tho ive only been playing for like 1 month i really want to try the beta test it sounds sooooo cool.I am so envious of all u other people that hav been playing CoH long enough to do the city of villains beta test i wish i could.I cant wait for CoV to come out.

COV at last cool cool.. Ive had COH from day 1 in the UK. i got to lvl 50 and unsubsribed 4 days ago do i still get a place on the beta test???????? I make that just under 6 months.....

I Signed up the day it was out, played it for . . . not sure how long then stopped for a couple of months now im back so does my 6 months continue from when i started again (eg if i played for 2 months stopped for 1 and no starting again so i have 2 months already)?????

Well i left world of warcraft when i tried out city of heroes since i thought it was a lot more fun.  So cant wait to c how much fun city of villans is going to be.  Not sure if anyone has asked yet but if you already have an account with city of heroes do need to make a new account with city of villans or do you get to use the same account since this pritty much decides weither or not i can get the game.

been subscribing for 6 months+ on a month by month basis does that make any difference to someone who subscribed for 6 months total.

Also how will i know if i got a slot will it feature on account like auto assault beta.

im sorry, this sucks, im in England but playing on US servers since the US trial, just coz peeps payed for 6 months does not mean they are going to be better Beta Testers, coz yes folks, u have to test the game.....

Im sorry, gratz and all to peeps that got in but it is a way of excluding N00bs...but y’all should know that i played like all day every day for ages, surely that would make me a ‘dedicated player’ I help my friends, help other players with my characters, im nice, i defend people when stupid idiots are BS-ing people for no apparent reason. Ya know, im a good CoH player - why am i not classed as a ‘dedicated’ player. Im not saying in any way that other people don’t deserve to get a Beta spot but i think there method of choosing is highly flawed. I have to say (well i don’t but im going to anyway)that this is my first major disappointment with the CoH team. 

Damn, this kind of bitterness is gonna make a great villian..... /images/smileys/vampire.gif

P.S, look, im sorry if this has offended anyone but these are my feelings and i will make them known, i will not surrender my volcano-to-be without a fight! /images/smileys/wink.gif I would appreciate some corespondence on this one.

So how’s the subscription work for this? Will we still only pay the £8 subscription from COH or will COV require us to pay for a new subscription on top of our existing COH one?

Also the American site has COV available for pre order which entitles you to a load of bundled goodies. will it be a pre-order over here and will we still get all the goodies??? Still miffed about missing my flash speeder by not being able to pre order JTL for SWG over here…

I have US version of CoH - got it from PlayNC website when it first came out as american friends of mine were playing.

Unfortunately I stopped playing for various reasons but want to when CoV’s comes out.

However, if I buy Euro CoV will it recognise my US CoH version?

If not, will I be able to purchase CoV online from PlayNC like I did CoH?

Well - that date was subject to change, so it may be after august.

The I5 patch for CoH is being applied today (so it seems), so you can bet that the CoV beta won’t start until that’s sorted.

At the end of the day, we’ll get it when they think its ready to go public, we’re all waiting, we all wanna be bad, some of us are gonna have to wait a little longer (i pre-ordered so im gonna get in AFTER the long-term CoH players, which is totally understandable, rewarding there long term customers and so on) then others. But at the end of the day, as with the auto-assault beta, and other beta’s i’ve been involved it, servers will not be running 24/7, there will be bugs that mean you wont be able to play for 2 - 3 day (not to mention the toon resets, ohh i hates them). ITS A BETA, all we’re getting is a little sneaky peek at what the finished game will be like, and we have the chance to say “oh this needs changing”.

On the pre-order from GAME (i have already pre-ordered) they say because i have pre-ordered the game i will get a key for the beta test, is this true? if so hows it gonna work, will the test be downloadable? will you be able to keep beta characters?

Apologies for the thread hijack but this was just pointed out to me by someone, do you actually mean character transfer is looking like it’s coming soon? I play with about 15 other europeans on the US server at the moment and I think we’d be what more than a little happy if we could get these characters on to a more time zone friendly server. I’ve been hoping for it since it was hinted at when we were playing in the EU beta.

If I buy CoV and buy a 12 month subscription to that, and after the first month, I decide to buy CoH, do I get to play CoH the 5 months that is left of my subsctiption, or do I have to wait or buy a new subscription to play it?
