The folks over at IGN have been chatting with Cryptic Studios Creative Director Jack ‘Statesman’ Emmert about City of Villains, the upcoming stand-alone expansion for City of Heroes. As well as talking more about how Player Vs Player combat will work, States reveals that the ‘city of villains’ will actually be a group of islands:

The City of Villains is the infamous Rogue Isles, controlled by the villain group Arachnos. The Rogue Isles were once a French colony, but they were quickly converted into a haven for pirates. Despite the Rogue Isles’ reputation, nations found it convenient to have “law free” zone in the Atlantic, so the Isles acquired UN status.

So it seems that the heroes of Paragon City will soon be able to mix work with pleasure on a sunny island vacation - although we suspect that tourism won’t be the major industry on the Rogue Isles…

Will we have to buy city of villians seperately or can we download it? Also will city of villains overwrite city of heroes and not be able to use heroes again?

AmpleTube: City of Villains will be available as a boxed game. I’m not sure if there’ll also be a downloadable version, but we’ll be able to let you know nearer to the release.

If you already own City of Heroes, City of Villains will act as an expansion pack, allowing you to play both heroes and villains.

yeh do we have to pay extra subscription fees to play COV? and do we have to create a new NC account?,

will we be able to copy our existing heroes to the new city of vilains?

It depends if you have City of Heroes if you do then you wont have to pay another subscription or create a new playNC account since city of villains would be acting as an expansion for city of heroes. if you dont have it then yes you will have to pay one subscription for city of villains and create a playNC account, but then if you ever get city of heroes then you will not have to pay a second subscription or a make a new playNC account.

so do we actually have to pay another sub fee or is the monthly fee we pay at the moment going to be increased? also, if we do have to pay another sub fee, will there be a discount for people who own CoH and CoV?

Man I was debating getting COH since I’m playing the 21 day free trial now, but if they are so money hungry that they are going to charge another 5 bucks a month to play something that should be just an expansion pack...screw that.  If they keep it at $14.95 I’ll probably buy both CoH and CoV though.

I really don’t understand why we have to pay extra even if we don’t want to play online, we’ve payed for the disk, can’t we just play the game without having to pay more! it’s sounds like a big rip-off to me. why pay more?

Ben: It’s not possible to play City of Heroes and/or City of Villains offline - they are online games. As to why there’s a subscription fee, check out our FAQ section.
