Statesman’s Anniversary Address
29 Apr, 2005
On the anniversary of the original US release of City of Heroes, Statesman has some words for the heroes from around the world who have dedicated themselves to defending Paragon City from the dark forces arrayed against it…
Statesman’s First Anniversary Address to the Heroes of Paragon City
On this date, one year ago, the call went out. It was a call from a beleaguered city, under assault by alien forces bent on the total destruction of humanity.
It was a call for heroes.
And you answered that call. You answered by the thousands. From all walks of life, from towns and cities, from farms and factories and offices, you came to that shining beacon of tomorrow called Paragon City, and refused to let its light be snuffed out. It has been said many times: All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. You good men and women did not stand by and allow that to happen this time, in this place.
Alone at first, you held the darkness at bay. You denied those who would prey on the weak and defenseless. Then together you drew your battle lines and stood your ground. This far and no farther was your vow. Street by street, block by block, you waged a war against implacable foes and emerged, time and again, the victors. Though often bloodied, you remained unbowed, ready to pursue the fight anywhere and anytime.
For this and much more, the citizens of Paragon City are in your debt.
For this and much more, I am eternally grateful.
Today, on the first anniversary of this city’s call for help, I proudly address the greatest assemblage of heroes the world has ever seen.
This is your time.
The challenge has been met. The battle has been joined. Though our struggle is far from complete, I have no doubt that we will prevail. The word has gone out loudly and clearly—this city holds no future for those who would serve crime and chaos.
To the heroes of Paragon City, you who are the last best hope of Earth: I salute you. You have truly made this a city of heroes.
