Try City of Heroes for free!

31 May, 2005

imageThat’s right, if you’ve ever thought about joining the heroes of Paragon City in their fight against criminal masterminds, giant monsters, alien invaders and the forces of chaos and darkness, now’s the time. NCsoft has teamed up with some of Europe’s biggest PC games magazines to offer a special 14-day trial of City of Heroes to their readers - for free! You won’t even need a credit card to register.

Potential heroes in the UK should grab a copy of Issue 150 of PC Gamer, due out on 9 June, which will come in a rather snazzy (and easy to spot) red package (pictured to the right). Both the DVD and CD Editions will feature a unique 14-day trial code with which you can start a City of Heroes account. The DVD Edition also features the full City of Heroes client on the DVD, while the CD Edition includes the Updater, which will allow you to download the client.

imageSpanish players, on the other hand, should nip down to the shops now and grab Issue 125 of Micromania (pictured to the left). As well as a unique 14-day trial code, the full City of Heroes client is included on the cover-mounted DVD.

To help you get started, you can download a PDF version of the game manual here. For more help and advice, check out the Official Message Boards, where there are plenty of experienced players willing to point a new hero in the right direction.

(French gamers should click here for details of the PC JEUX trial offer, while German players can read all about the PC Games trial offer here.)

Is any part of Paragon City map closed to trial players? I can’t enter de Hollows.

2Posted by Bridger on 04 Jun at 15:27

X-Charge: The trial is not limited in any way, but The Hollows is a Hazard Zone, and requires you reach Security Level 5 before you can enter.

0Posted by MAdMaN on 05 Jun at 13:24

Daju, it’s up to the Swedish PC Gamer to decide whether they include a trial or not.

0Posted by mr.kipling on 06 Jun at 21:01

why cant we just download it off of the website?

0Posted by Nightfiend on 10 Jun at 02:48

What about the Portuguese people?

0Posted by doug on 10 Jun at 21:13

i downloaded the updator online thinking everything was fine, but all it gives me is the american servers, and thats no good. anybody know how i can get the uk servers?

0Posted by simon jacques on 11 Jun at 08:56

i cant start the trial because i cant make a character how do i do it i have got delux one

2Posted by Bridger on 11 Jun at 13:40

Daju: We’re working on a deal with PC Player magazine in Scandanavia - more details will be posted to this site soon.

doug: The free trial offer on the US website is for the US version of the game. For a free trial of the European version, you need to grab one of the magazines listed in the story above.

simon jacques: I’m afraid I don’t understand the question - if you’re having technical problems, please contact Customer Support. (Be sure to read the ‘How do I contact someone in support?’ FAQ.)

I can’t get it to work!! it says my password and/or username is incorrect.

0Posted by Keith Richards on 11 Jun at 22:29

I have purchased the magazine, downloaded the game and the updates but have not got a code to add the game to my account. Where do you get the 14 day trial code from?

0Posted by Cghost on 11 Jun at 22:48

I’m having the same problem as Luke. I’ve registered with NCSoft and created my CoH account but can’t log in to the game because it says my username or password is incorrect?

0Posted by AceGunnne on 12 Jun at 12:59

After you’ve had your 14 days, is there the option to upgrade to a proper account? I would hate to have to start my character all over again after developing him for 2 weeks because I couldn’t continue with the trial account.

0Posted by Jelly on 12 Jun at 17:02

I was just wondering i bought the deluxe copy of the game and it says i can give the 15day trial to a friend. Can i do this and then my friend uses the 15days then can he move up to a subscription or buy the game and keep his characters he made in the trial.

TY

0Posted by alex on 13 Jun at 00:11

ive got it up and running finally had to download something for it to run on eu servers (its linked on http://www.pcgamer.co.uk in the forums)

i just cant see anything i can get it to load upto the charactor creation screen then i cant see what im creating.. can pick all the options tho

2Posted by Bridger on 13 Jun at 10:58

luke, Cghost and alex: For help with any technical, billing or account-related problems, please contact our Customer Support team via their website at http://uk.support.plaync.com/.  (Be sure to read the How do I contact someone in support? FAQ.)

Keith Richards: The code should be printed on the back of the CD or DVD cover.

AceGunnne: If you decide to buy the game after your trial, you will be able to keep the characters you created. Please see this FAQ for details: Can I keep my heroes from the free trial if I buy the game?

Jelly: The ‘Sidekick code’ included in the Deluxe Edition is different to the 14-day free trial currently available in conjunction with European PC games magazines. After the 15 days included with the Sidekick code, your friend will be able to subscribe and continue playing without having to buy the game.

where i can download that game for free ? have any website ?

0Posted by drawoh on 13 Jun at 21:55

I cant log in either, what did you download alex, help, need a link

All network ports are open

IM tearing my hair out!

aaaah

2Posted by Bridger on 14 Jun at 10:32

n0turn0: The European 14-day trial is not available for download - you’ll need to grab one of the magazines with the offer, as detailed in the news story above.

0Posted by Daed on 14 Jun at 14:37

i have the uk mag. i have the demo. it is installed. however i cannot find the “unique 14-day trial code” that you speak of?!

2Posted by Bridger on 14 Jun at 15:38

Daed: As I said to Keith Richards above, the code should be on the back of the CD or DVD case.

0Posted by zuurtje on 14 Jun at 18:00

Just wanna say that it’s lame! Why you ask?

Answer: Americans just have to click on a link and they get a trial period (example: gamespot.com). The rest of the world has to buy magazines wich kost 4-5. And also: we don’t have pc gamer or micromania here. This way its easier to find an original version of duck hunt then a trial key for COH. I betatested COH from day one (wich was btw an open beta so EVERYBODY could participate) I wanted 2 trial it first because i didnt play it 4 a long time and wanted to see if it was still worth wile 2 play it. Guess i’ll be thinking a bit longer now. Maybe whining 2 you folks but thats how i feel about it.

2Posted by Bridger on 15 Jun at 10:53

zuurtje: I’m sorry you’re unhappy, but we felt that by working in conjunction with some of Europe’s biggest PC gaming magazines we would be able to bring the trial to more gamers than by having an online version. We may do an online trial at some future date, but that hasn’t been decided yet.

(Incidentally, the European Beta of City of Heroes was not ‘Open’ - testers had to apply for a place, and if selected were sent an invite.)

0Posted by AshleyB on 15 Jun at 12:44

I’m having the same problems as Luke, Cghost and Alex - I’ve contacted support and I think they’re sorting out my problem, but I find it interesting other people are having this issue. Anyway, looking forwards to it - I enjoyed the beta, and even if they don’t fix the trial I’m still grabbing Retail.

0Posted by Innes on 16 Jun at 14:53

I am also having Login problems with the european trial. I had downloaded the US trial and that worked fine but my european account doesn’t seam to let me login.

0Posted by Nick on 16 Jun at 19:38

It appears that I’m not alone in not being able to get my game running. I downloaded it, created an NC Main account, inputted the code, went to play and at the login screen I keep getting told my password or username are incorrect.

Of note is that in my account management screen its still asking me to “Activate” CoH. I tried to do it again, but I’m told that the code is already being used. Well of course it is ....I inputted it !!!! ARGH !!!

Really want to try this game as I’m fed up with being mucked about by SOE with SWG.

Please help !

2Posted by Bridger on 17 Jun at 11:31

Nick: Please contact our Customer Support team via their website at http://uk.support.plaync.com/ (be sure to read the How Do I Contact Someone In Support section) for help with any account problems.

You don’t need to to ‘acivate’ the account - that button is used if you buy the full game and wish to upgrade your trial account to a retail one, allowing you to continue using the heroes you created in the trial, as described in this FAQ: Can I keep my heroes from the free trial if I buy the game?

0Posted by zamaniac on 18 Jun at 12:39

what stops me using the american download and going on american servers by the way?

0Posted by Span on 18 Jun at 13:56

I was going to download and trial this game, until I figured that this option was reserved for americans and that us, europeans, must purchase a magazine (which, in my country, would also have to be an imported magazine) in order to do so. I guess I’ll wait until there’s a downloadable trial for euro’s, too.

Looks like a nice game, tho.

0Posted by STEPHAN VALLARE on 18 Jun at 18:05

I LIKE CITY OF HEROES

0Posted by Ally on 18 Jun at 20:43

My friend’s both have the delux version of the game and neither could see how to use the 14 day trial or the side kick option.  I am now ordering the game and a PC so I can join the good fight but I wish the download, 14 day trail or sidekick had been easier to use so we could have all joined together instead of taking it in turns!

Also a download link would have been easier to access than unobtainable magazines.  We all know its that you must be getting some gain from it other than just new addicts or EU would have had the same privallage as USA.

0Posted by Spinny on 19 Jun at 02:13

Yeah but what use is Customer surport at 1am when your account trial is already ticking away?

2Posted by Bridger on 19 Jun at 12:34

Ally: To use the Sidekick code, your friend just has to give you the code and either the CDs or DVD (to install the game on your PC - you can give them back afterwards). You then follow the instructions for using the Sidekick code (on the back of the DVD case) to create an account and play.

To use the 14-day Free Trial, just buy one of the magazines carrying the offer, and follow the instructions in the magazine to install the game and set-up a trial account.

Remember that with the Sidekick code from a Deluxe Edition box, you won’t have to buy the game to continue playing after the 15-days included with the code. With the 14-day Free Trial, you will need to buy the game to carry on after the 14 days expire.

Oh, and the ‘gain’ we get from running the European 14-day Trial in conjunction with some of Europe’s biggest PC gaming magazines is to make the Trial available to thousands of gamers who might never hear about an online offer. We wanted to give as many people as possible the chance to try out City of Heroes for free.

0Posted by Funky2000 on 20 Jun at 13:48

Hi.. I brought City of Heros Deluxe recently, and am enjoying playing the Euro version.. Since I have the Sidekick code, I am considering giving it to a friend.. what my friend has asked me is: “is the Sidekick code a one-off single person use code, or can they then inturn then also pass this onto a friend so-as to get their friend interested in CoH as well??” it seems to me that the sidekick code trial idea is great, however why bother with a code like this, why not just offer people a 14day trial that anyone can use.. IE offer an online generated trial cod. people could still see the offer in the mag, but the code would be generated online so you wouldn’t have to actually go out and buy the mag for the free code. a Trial of 14days is surely enough for someone to progress their char beyond lv10 and know if they want to continue progressing their Char sufficiently to actually Upgrade to the full version. Obviously for my friend to pass on the SK code the person would also need to lend my copy of the original game disks. but how is that any different from getting the code from the Mag?

2Posted by Bridger on 20 Jun at 14:08

Funky2000: All City of Heroes serial codes are single-use, and cannot be shared. As I explained to Ally above, the key difference between the Sidekick codes and the Free Trial codes is that the Sidekick code is a full non-Deluxe version of the game, whereas the Free Trial code is just that - a free trial, after which you will need to buy the game to continue playing.

0Posted by Gabz on 20 Jun at 20:07

Im having some login problems.I got the demo from pcgamer, made the account, downloaded all the updates etc, but when I run the game and try to log in, nothing happens. I can still move my mouse, but none of the buttons can be pressed, and I can’t leave the program, in anyway I can think of. I end up habving to manually switch off the comp to go back to the desktop.

Any ideas?

0Posted by martin meacell on 20 Jun at 20:32

hi i really want to become a super heroe

0Posted by Mister X on 20 Jun at 22:39

nice idea to give people a preview version so they can try the game.

0Posted by Kaige on 21 Jun at 00:55

Heres my problem, Iv been a COh player since the AMerican beta and had an account since the first month of US CoH, Im currently house sitting this now and didnt have my dics.I installed the free trial version but cant get my account to work even though iv been billed. Will this Euro version not work with my current COH account(im a brit by the way)

2Posted by Bridger on 21 Jun at 11:16

Gabz: For any technical problems with City of Heroes, please contact Customer Support via their website at http://uk.support.plaync.com/ - be sure to read the ‘ How do I contact someone in support?’ section first.

Kaige: The US and EU versions of City of Heroes are different - the EU version will only work on the EU servers.

0Posted by Kaige on 22 Jun at 17:39

Thanks for the quick response, ok i understand the clients are different but why cant i use my current ncsoft account to for the euro client. Will i have to create an entire new account just to use euro servers

2Posted by Bridger on 22 Jun at 19:24

Kaige: You’ll be able to use your existing PlayNC Master Account, but you’ll need to add a new European City of Heroes game account to it to play on the European servers.

0Posted by T-500 on 29 Jun at 16:07

I agree with Nightfiend. Why don’t you do the same thing with a portuguese mag like Mega Score or BGamer (or any other mag)? It’s really difficult to find micromania or pc gamer in my country. Unlike other people I wouldn’t mind to pay 4-5 to get the trial of CoH because I can’t isn’t for sale in Portugal(don’t ask me why because I don’t know). I would buy also if it was for sale in here. I won’t buy it by the internet because someone can hack to may system an steal my credit card number.

2Posted by Bridger on 29 Jun at 16:20

Nightfiend and T-500: We’re hoping to offer some form of internet trial to follow on from the magazine trials currently running - we should have more news about this fairly shortly.

We’re still working on getting City of Heroes into stores in Portugal, so don’t give up. Several very reputable European online stores will deliver to Portugal, so if you can’t wait, ordering it online would be the best way. Major online retailers are extremely secure these days, and many credit cards also offer protection against fraud on the internet (check with your bank or card supplier for details of their policies).

0Posted by adolf on 30 Jun at 15:47

Just wanted to add that lack of downloadable version is big flaw.

I did grab US trial and playing on US servers now from Poland. Nice game. Though now to actully buy it I need:

a) download it again (Euro version) really doubt it is sooo much different from US one that you need to grap gigabyte of data again. May add that you have no chance to buy it in Poland in the box at all.

b) gave up my trail character as it is on US server

c) I have no idea at all how euro servers works. What ping is, lag, how many people are there - nothing

Would really help if you would let people actully try this game as you decided to give this trial thing anyway.

PS

I did play LineageII from NCSoft for 2 months and gave it up becouse of terrible “custumer care”. Don’t have feeling anything changed in NCSoft.

Maybe thats ok support of you form US/UK but if you live in Poland you pretty much second rate custumer.

From good things good that one can buy/download it at least. But there are little things you can make to possible attract more custumers, like allow EU download trial.

2Posted by Bridger on 30 Jun at 16:36

adolf: As I mentioned above, we are hoping to have a downloadable trial in Europe in the near future. Magazine-based trials do have downsides, but equally, they have advantages over an internet-based one. This way, we hope to get the best of both worlds.

I cannot speak for the support for Lineage 2, but I can assure you that, as far as the European version of City of Heroes is concerned, no one is considered by us to be a ‘second rate customer’. If you choose to subscribe to the European version of the game and have any concerns about the Customer Support you receive, please feel free to send me a Private Message (PM) on our Official Message Boards and I’ll look into it.

I’m french and I’m currently playing the trial in american servers. Sometimes my connexion is a bit late but I don’t have any major problems, except with some players who think that their servers are “american only so go away you fool stranger from frou frou country”.

btw I’m really impressed with the customization of toon O.O I already stopped to play 3 MMORPG, I think I’ll definitely buy this one.
