Statesman’s Issue #5 Address

30 Aug, 2005

The latest free expansion for City of Heroes, Issue #5: Forest of Dread, has been released. Who better to introduce it than Jack ‘Statesman’ Emmert, Cryptic Studios Creative Director and Lead Designer of both City of Heroes and City of Villains?

So, over to the man himself…

It’s unbelievable that City of Heroes has been around for over a year. Five expansions. Hundreds of hours of new content. Thousands of players. And our first sequel game, City of Villains, is entering Beta.

Our latest issue, ‘Forest of Dread’, introduces the mystical town of Croatoa into the City of Heroes universe. Players can learn about the mysterious Cabal and the enigmatic Tuatha De Danaan. Heroes can combat these threats with brand new power sets, such as Archery and Sonics.

Update 5 also includes several modifications to powers. Why? To ensure that every player has a role to fill within a group. We still want people to be able to solo, but in a group, every Archetype, every power, should have an opportunity to shine. At the same time, we didn’t want to slow down the pace of the game, so we increased experience points equivalently. A quick session will show that you’ll be gaining experience faster than ever!

We are automatically reducing every character’s Reputation to ‘Heroic’ – the base setting. This change will allow players whose powers have been altered to become used to their abilities before tackling tougher foes. In addition, we’ve gone through the mission maps and redone spawn placements to prevent situations where a hero would be overwhelmed.

Thank you to all the players on the Training Room for helping us debug Issue 5. See you in Paragon City!

Issue #5 is live on the European City of Heroes servers now. Full release notes can be found on the Official Message Boards.

do we all get free respecs

Regen Scrappers may well have been the toughest of all scrappers, but there is no doubt at all that they are now the weakest. Regens didn’t have the big defence bonuses given by Super Reflexes. They didn’t have the significant damage resistances of Invulnerability. They weren’t about preventing damage happening to them, but were all about healing it faster than it could accumulate (hopefully). Without Instant Healing as a toggle, that is no longer even a vague possibility and they are left as the melee character who must keep running off to recover. Not heroic. Not the concept of the powerset. And not much fun. /images/smileys/sick.gif

But hey, on the plus side there’s a new map with pumpkins in it.  /images/smileys/rolleyes.gif

Yes, as announced on the Official Message Boards, there will be a free respec and a free costume respec granted today (Thursday 1 September).

If you want to keep as up to date as possible with the game and what’s happening, I strongly recommend checking the boards regularly - particularly the Announcements board and the Dev Digest, which will show you all the recent posts by Cryptic and NCsoft staff.

Hi everyone,

after listening to a fair amount of moaning yesterday, I just want to say a couple of things:

- I like the way controllers were made more useful! The containment power rules! /images/smileys/smile.gif

- The Archer Blaster and Defender are great fun!

- I don’t have a high level tank myself, but I teamed with two fire tanks and one ice tank yesterday and neither of them seemed to die every 5 seconds or feel useless.

Specially since the moaning started 10 minutes after the servers went live, I have serious doubts that people actually tested before screaming bloody murder!

OK, fire tanks were nerfed - but if you are honest, that was overdue. My apologies to all fire tanks out there, but this AT was severely unbalanced.

After playing issue 5 for a full day I can only say: well done and thank you!

Peace

Zoser

Lots of good ideas for exp 5 and well done to all involved , no i take that back. Well done to all involved apart from the gibbon that destroyed the fire tanker , why why why ruin the build by hammering BURN ????

They were the most balanced build , not def heavy and not att heavy, just right.

It took a long time to get to lvl 36 ( wife and kids permiting ) and now i feel that it is a complete waste of time.

Sry to moan on about it in an otherwise spot on Expansion, but surly you made a bid boo-boo with the fire tanker.

Can’t agree with Swamp Monster at all.

Have played I5 for approx 9 hours with my ‘regen’ scrapper, and found it to be perfectly tough, fighting +2 lvl boss and +2 lvl other with relative ease.

XP is excellent as I managed to gain almost 70k in 1 night to get to lvl 30.

Maybe im wrong but so far I5 rocks !

Am liking the new stuff, the npc fights, the new events etc, also the def changes, was getting very silly when the only vague challenge was to have it on invince and even then wasn’t really so nice job.

Replying to Thermight no burn was not “just right” my main is a level 50 fire tank and i could usually out damage everyone else, thats plain silly. However whats worse is what has now befallen a tier 7 power - in that the tier one power is now much much better than it. Ooo shouldn’t say that too loudly that bat may be falling blazing auras way next…

On the whole great release. The fact it doesn’t crash all the time makes it 100times better than the last one /images/smileys/grin.gif

I love i5. My tanker doesn’t seem severely nerfed, but he has had his defences down graded enough for my teams to start thinking about tactics before we go into a fight. Making tankers defences less effective has brought in a real sense that you have to play as a tight team. I like this as team play makes a game like CoH more fun to play.

I also love the new zone and the customised missions.

Great expansion in every way. You hit the nail on the head this time!

Is there a way to DL I5 without doing it through the loggin interface? My machine has been on all night DL’ing at 2.1k/sec (im on 512 ADSL) i cant help thinking that if i could DL manually id be able to find a mirror that lets me DL through Re-get in about 20 minutes for this size file.

Looking forward to playing ---- the waiting suxxors!!

Ferrox: No, I’m afraid not, but that does sound very slow. It may be worth contacting our Customer Support team at http://uk.support.plaync.com/ to see if they can help - be sure to read the instructions on using the site (How Do I Contact Someone In Support?)?

happend to me 2

0Posted by oogly on 15 Sep at 15:31

my main complaint with 15 is since its gone live my connectivity to mapserver sucks, also i feel defence has took a bit to much of a beating ,new pet release is great now if only we had a pet health bar and mabe a attack button ?/images/smileys/smile.gif*sigh*

If you want a tank scrapper, go for fire fire, burn patch is now next to useless, mobs run out of it immediately - couple the hightened AI awareness of dangerous area (i.e. burn patch - cos they don’t seem to ignore caltrops etc), the lower dmg of burn patch and the 3x longer recharge time of burn patch, unless you are a fire ice tank - burn patch is next to useless - add this to the fact that fire tanks have lame max resistance and defense…

Fire tanks may have been unbalanced if you consider how burn patch was used by many, but this severe nerfing - where fire tanks are copping it from all sides - has not helped to make them more fun to play, rather the opposite - i got a 31lvl fire fire thats now pap. :(

whats this about new pet releases oogly?!

sounds cool!

btw i LOVE the fact that soon we will be able to make our own bases on COH like you can on COV!

0Posted by Capt Freedom on 22 Sep at 14:53

Now whats all this hoohar about no-one will want to be tanks anymore as they have had there defences lowered. Now agreed i’ve not been playing long before I5 was released but hold on a mo.  I’ve found that the tanks are amazing at what they do----tank!  They are not there to outdamage the scrappers/blasters.  They are there to soak up the damage and keep the enemy occupied so that the rest of the team can take them out etc....  I’ve played many other MMORPG’s and play the “tank” class in almost all of them.  CoH is the first game that acutally makes me feel like i’m doing what it says on the tin.  That is the tank actually tanking the damage.  Excellent work.  Great game, great ideas and constant WHOA factor.  WHAT A GAME!  I salute you Statesman!

0Posted by Jakke on 23 Sep at 15:53

For all those moaning fire tanks: Keep in mind that Burn is a defense power and not an attack power. Now we will hopefully see some more interesting fire tank builds where the tank actually has picked some of its secondaries. The mindless “stand still and click Burn - days” are over. :D

Can anyone help me with a problem. I curently play CoH on light load, and find that zoning takes yonks. If I play as my defender and team starts without me, I have to rez everyone… is there something I can do to speed up zoning on my system except for obvious upgrade!

I5 rocks but still plenty of noobs that have not got a clue how to team play.

waiting for much criticism, Nine Claws

0Posted by Voidchild on 27 Sep at 01:20

I5 has brought much joy to my CoH-experience again. =) I can no longer pop out three singularities, hide in my force field and go to the store while the pets finish my mission for me. ;P

Monsters/AV’s are hard, but good teamwork perserveres and makes victory more satisfying than ever. ^^ My tank actually got debt when attacking a spawn of oranges and reds the other day. He was very confused about it, but he needed to be taken down a peg. wink No longer can he just stand still, have one toggle and one passive and never worry about dying while auto-taunting (once again, cue me going to the store) and following a teammate. ;P

Great work, yet again Cryptic! Now that the major powerchanges are out of the way, I look forward to seeing all the new content coming our way! ^^ Not to mention CoV… O_o
