The Inside Track
John Knox of Midnight Squad once frequented the grounds of Aerie Plaza. The lure of history could prove a worthwhile exploration of the area.
For the party monster in you, don’t let an evening pass by without swinging by one of the local raves. Rumour has it there is one nestled deep in the alleyways of the Astral District.
Skyway City
Skyway City was, at one time at least, the cornerstone of contemporary architecture. A sprawling network of highways and byways, the Skyway was designed to reduce bottlenecks on the bustling streets below; this it did with great effect, as congestion plummeted to an all time low. But take one step into the City, and you’ll get a feel for a different story altogether, not of dizzy heights but of dismal lows, of depravity and dismay.
You’ll notice the myriad of concrete bridges held aloft by fortified girders, a vision harking back to the ‘70s, an era when Skyway was truly on the up and up. Reaching into the heavens above, these steely structures heralded a new wave of city living, of hope and promise. Instead, they gave passage to a new, far deadlier form of traffic.
Within a matter of years, distribution cartels of designer drug Superadine were rife across the highways and by the turn of the decade the soaring ambitions of Skyway’s construction engineers were completely grounded. Superadine has swept through the city like an Inferno, and it’s going to take a special kind of hero to step in and stamp out the blaze.
The fallen dreams of the Skyway project made perfect beginnings for those mechanical maniacs, the Clockwork, who spent many years salvaging an empire from the very raw materials that were intended for a bold new age of citywide travel. That dream, we fear, is well and truly over, but Skyway’s battle has only just begun, in the streets above, below and in between. It’s an area the PCPD has all but given up on, their traffic control department having entirely vanished from the vicinity.
So, it might sound all doom and gloom for the average tourist - and in fact it is, so if you’re devoid of any special ability stay well away. Those who are bestowed with unique talents may be interested to learn that for all its shortcomings, Skyway City does have one distinct advantage over neighbouring districts. Like those that dwell here, it’s exceptionally well connected.
A gentle stroll across Vista Plaza will bring you to Atlas Park, while if you head west through the Astral District you’ll land in Perez Park. For the hot-headed amongst you, amble eastward for The Hollows and Sewer Network; although please follow protocol and tell a friend where you’re heading before you set off (better still, take them with you).
If you’ve got a head for heights, danger lurks even on the uppermost streets of Skyway; pay special attention to the mobs of Trolls grabbing turf on every flyover and rooftop. Newcomers might give the Gardvord a wide berth. Their abuse of Superadine has become so unruly, it seems no form of savagery is beyond them.
Venture southbound and you’ll find yourself in a lifeless quarter, home to enough of those nefarious city strays that it has come to be called the Land of the Lost. If you’re misfortunate enough to wind up here, have purpose and show resolve - any sign of uncertainty and these misguided miscreants will simply steal you from the streets. It is widely believed that this, and most other areas beneath Skyway have been corrupted by hostile rings of Superadine pushers – feel free to clean up the streets.
High crime, in every sense, is the name of the game around these parts. But if you have time to rid the streets of sin and restore the rise of Skyway City, then don your costume and set your sights for the skies above.
